I paint clouds on a cloudless day. When it’s hot, it feels pleasant because the sky is so blue, and I have the impression that what I’m doing makes sense. I imagine adding them to the sky and how beautiful they look against that color. They also give a bit of coolness. When I paint them from imagination, I follow the traces I leave behind and develop the cloud until it is formed, or until I grow bored of it.
I paint clouds (from observation), looking at them through the window or while sitting in the park. It’s a soothing lesson in experiencing the things and states passing away – I notice a shape, begin to paint it, it seems very fixed, concrete, and graspable, I look at it again and see how much it has changed, and after a moment it disappears, and there’s no longer any outline of that defined shape. Sometimes I then paint the cloud from memory, but more often I leave it unfinished, because I am attracted by this temporality. I prefer acknowledging that the cloud has vanished than trying to preserve it. I like how they disappear.
Sometimes, here quite often, the day is so cloudy that the clouds don’t separate from the huge dense mass, forming a uniform layer that doesn’t let colors through, and you can’t tell what time of day it is; from morning to evening the light is the same muted grey, and then night falls.

Buitenshuis refers to creating as internal experience, which paradoxically entails the necessity to go out of the comfort zone, outside the home and to share and confront with others. Buitenshuis refers to the state of living in a language, which is neither your mother tongue nor the one which is officially spoken in your place of residence. Buitenshuis refers to the relationship between creating and feeling at home; and to creating at home.
