One, two, three – the king is watching!, Emilia Grzeczka, 2015

The cycle of works ‘One, two, three – the king is watching!’ is a visual essay about an action of looking at a white wall. It consists of several light projections on the walls, sound, artstic books, object and video-performance. Each of the projections is a moving image, which I created in an opposition to a movie structure. Each of them investigates different philiosophical and artistic aspects of being and perceiving in the isolated space of the white-cube gallery. My main interest in that case, was a sense of time in the situation of impossibility of notice any change, in a state of stimulus deprivation. The loud sound in the space – an irregular shooting, is a sound of the camera shutter from the process of creating one of the moving images. This sound emanates from the video- performance, but is present in whole exhibition, intensifying the connections between particular pieces and provoking perception of the exhibition and gallery as a strange time-and-space machinery, visual-and-sound engine.

Zero is an abstraction. In rational order zero is necessary as a reference. It enables a logical description of the world, evaluating, scale establishing. It’s involved in everything as a contradiction, as absence. Theoretically, everything has the potential of its own lack. Lack evokes the thing. Noticing the absence is possible thanks to imagination, memory, expectation and through confronting them to perception. The impression of emptiness can expand perception activity, enforcing awareness and feeling of the specific situation, concrete space, time and circumstances. Conceptual zero in my work – despite being the way of searching for means and expression limits – redirects attention from ‘object of art‘ to its recipient itself and their surrounding. The work ‘0-1-1’ evokes an association with the effect of watching a movie in a not completely dark room, when monitor reflects those who are watching, from time to time.

Two images and space is site-specific. I’ve taken pictures of a gallery space, using analogue camera and multiple exposure. The image, created in time and space, is hanged in a corner of the empty gallery. There is no story, there is no another reality created by this image. It is a document of author’s presence in space and time. It also comments upon conventional ways of thinking about photography as objective, one-perspective and one-moment images.
